Huntsville, Texas has one of the largest if not largest bat colonies in the state of Texas. The bat colony is located at Ave I and 14th street. It is the old Texas Department of Criminal Justice Cotton Warehouse.
Reading about the bats in Huntsville instantly brought me back to a summer night two years ago when I camped near the Trinity River. We set up our tents near a large oak, and as dusk fell a cloud of tiny, fluttering silhouettes emerged from the trees, swirling like a living curtain of midnight. The air was warm, and the chorus of insects was punctuated by the soft, rhythmic squeaks of the bats as they darted in perfect coordination. I remember lying on my back, eyes fixed on the sky, feeling both humbled and a little startled by their graceful acrobatics.
